The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Guatemala (erected 18 December 1534, as the Diocese of Guatemala) is a metropolitan diocese, responsible for the suffragan Dioceses of Escuintla, Jalapa, Santa Rosa de Lima, Verapaz, Cobán and Zacapa y Santo Cristo de Esquipulas. It was elevated on 16 December 1743. The current Metropolitan Archbishop of Guatemala is His Excellency, The Most Reverend Archbishop Oscar Julio Vian Morales, S.D.B.; he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI on Monday, October 4, 2010 to replace His Eminence, Cardinal Rodolfo Quezada Toruno, who was retiring for reasons of age, having reached the age of 75 at which all bishops must submit their resignations to the Pope.
